Code of Conduct Policy - Digital Device

December 22, 2017

Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

It has recently come to our attention that students have been using their phones to take pictures and videos of themselves and other students on the school buses. This is a violation of the Code of Conduct Policy since recording and photographing of students and staff members without written authorization or consent are prohibited. If students are observed using a digital device such as a cell phone or tablet to take videos and/or pictures in the school setting or on the bus, the device will be confiscated. If confiscated, parents will be asked to meet with the principal to address the Code of Conduct infraction(s) and to recover the device.

The Code of Conduct was reviewed with our students in an assembly program and misappropriate electronic use was explained. However, we ask your assistance and support. Please remind your child that digital photography and/or videography are strictly prohibited in school, on school grounds, on school buses and anywhere that school activities are conducted. Moreover, during the school day, students in possession of cell phones and personal tablets must keep them stored in a locker (or backpack). The failure to follow school policies and rules will result in disciplinary action.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Island Park students making spirits bright

The holiday season holds a vast array of traditions, and a common one throughout the Island Park Public Schools and community is that of helping others. In an annual effort to share their holiday joy, Student Council members from Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School and Lincoln Orens Middle School spearheaded toy drives aimed to benefit those less fortunate.

Thanks to the philanthropic spirits of the young leaders and the collaboration and generosity of students, staff members, parents and local businesses, many families will receive the gifts that are on their wish lists. Donations also include necessities that will make the winter months warmer for their recipients.

The Student Council members and their advisors have collected an assortment of brand new toys, which they will sort out and wrap in hopes of providing happy and memorable holiday seasons for those in need.

Children’s Author Brings Stories to Life at Hegarty

Children’s author Heather Forest visited Francis X. Hegarty School in Island Park on Nov. 9, when she presented two interactive concerts featuring musical folktales. She engaged her audiences of kindergartners to fourth-graders in various songs and stories from around the world.

The award-winning author presents an assortment of educational programs in schools, with specialties in storytelling, writing workshops and musical performances that bring fables to life. She has written nine books, including longtime favorites “The Baker’s Dozen: A Colonial American Tale,” “Stone Soup,” “A Big Quiet House: A Yiddish Folktale from Eastern Europe” and “The Woman Who Flummoxed the Fairies.” Her more recent work includes “Wisdom Tales from Around the World,” “Ancient and Epic Tales: From Around the World,” “Feathers: A Jewish Tale from Eastern Europe,” “The Contest Between the Sun and the Wind,” “Wonder Tales from Around the World” and “The Little Red Hen: An Old Fable.”

Thanks to the generosity of the Island Park PTA, a different guest author is selected to inspire students at Hegarty each year. The visiting author events support the district’s literacy and language arts initiatives while encouraging creativity and communication among students.
